The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowships

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowship Program provides support for young scholars to complete their dissertation and, later, to advance their research after being awarded the Ph.D.  This program awards fellowships in two categories: Dissertation Completion Fellowships  and Recent Doctoral Recipients Fellowships.  A grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supports this program.

Dissertation Completion Fellowship

These fellowships are to assist graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences in the last year of Ph.D. dissertation writing.  This program aims to encourage timely completion of the Ph.D.  Applicants must be prepared to complete their dissertations within the period of their fellowship tenure or shortly thereafter.  Fellowship details:

  • Stipend: $25,000, plus funds for research costs of up to $3,000 and for university fees of up to $5,000
  • Tenure: one year beginning summer 2009
  • Completed applications must be submitted through the ACLS Online Fellowship Application system (ofa.acls.org) no later than 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, November 12, 2008.
  • Notifications will be sent in late March 2009.

Recent Doctoral Recipients Fellowship
This is the second stage of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowship Program, which provides support for young scholars.  The first part of this program — the Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships — makes possible a year of supported research and writing, to help students complete their dissertation.  The second part of the program provides support for a year following the completion of the doctorate for scholars to advance their research.  A grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supports this program.  Fellowship details:

  • Stipend: $30,000
  • Tenure: one year beginning between June and September (for either the 2009-2010 or 2010-2011 academic year)
  • Completed applications must be submitted through the ACLS Online Fellowship Application system (ofa.acls.org) no later than 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, December 10, 2008.
  • Notifications will be sent in late March 2009.
