Mellon Mays Summer Programs

at Barnard College

This week-long workshop introduces new Barnard Fellows to the life of the academic and helps them select their Mellon mentors.

at Bowdoin College

This five-week summer program hosts Bowdoin Fellows and South African Fellows.  It aims to hone presentation skills, address the academic tools required of doctoral students, help Fellows understand the nature of academia, emphasize the difference between written and oral communication, develop possible MMUF Journal submissions, nurture relationships that motivate students in their academic endeavors, and provide access to a variety of perspectives on research projects.

at Columbia University

This three-day workshop introduces Columbia Fellows to key elements of writing research proposals and allows them to begin work with their mentor.

at Emory University

The UNCF/Mellon Summer Institute hosts Emory and UNCF Fellows.  Amongst them, it inspires greater commitment to the pursuit of the PhD and post-secondary teaching; provides support in the completion of the prospectus; sharpens research, writing and presentation skills; encourages development of vibrant and progressive intellectual community across disciplinary and institutional lines; and provides topics with which to feed the Seminar portion of MMUF during the academic year.    

at Hunter College 

A two-week experience, this program introduces Hunter Fellows to the life of the academic highlighting research methods and common challenges faced in graduate school.

at the University of Chicago

A nine-week summer program, this Mellon opportunity is open to all Fellows.  It aims to initiate and cultivate each student as future researchers and scholars who will enter PhD programs and pursue careers in the academy. In training and cultivating aspiring scholars and researchers, the approach is one that attends simultaneously to the academic, social and practical needs of each student.

at Wesleyan University

This six-week summer program hosts Mellon Fellows from Wesleyan, South Africa, and CUNY schools to strengthen Fellows' research skills in an environment free of the normal distractions.  It allows coordinators more time to work with Fellows and create meaningful mentor-student relationships.

at Williams College

With a six-week summer program,Williams hosts their Fellows and South African Fellows to provide intensive instruction in advanced research and allow for positive working relationships.
